How to Choose the Right Type of Sign
Portable Indoor Banner Stands
Signs that get carried, set up and packed away again. Basic retractable banners suit occasional events and lobby use. Premium retractable banners suit teams that set up and tear down constantly and need a stand that survives it. Both roll into their own base and travel in a bag.
Vinyl, Mesh and Fabric Banners
Large printed sheets that hang, stretch or tie down. Vinyl banners are the workhorse for storefronts and promotions. Mesh banners let wind pass through, which is what you want on a fence or scaffolding. Fabric banners have a soft matte face that photographs well indoors.
Rigid Boards and Street Signs
Signs that hold their own shape. Outdoor sign boards handle weather and stay up for months or years. Sandwich boards go out on the sidewalk each morning and come back in at close. Foam boards are the light indoor option for presentations, events and retail messaging.
Window, Wall and Floor Graphics
When the surface is already there and you just need to brand it. Large format stickers cover windows, walls, floors and equipment without any hardware at all.
Indoor vs Outdoor Signage Materials
This is where most signage money gets wasted. A material that looks perfect in a showroom can fail in one Vancouver winter.
Four things decide whether a sign lasts:
- Moisture. Paper faced and fabric materials absorb water. Anything outdoors needs a sealed or plastic face
- Wind. A solid banner on an exposed fence acts like a sail. Either perforate it or anchor it properly
- UV. Direct south facing sun fades unprotected ink. UV stable inks and laminate buy you years
- Handling. A sign moved daily wears out faster than one bolted to a wall, regardless of material

Artwork and File Setup for Large Format
These apply across every format on this page:
- Print ready PDF is best. Vector logos wherever you have them
- Raster images at 150 DPI at full size is fine for large format. 300 DPI for anything read up close
- Build files in CMYK and keep critical text well clear of the trim edge
- Size your type for viewing distance. A sidewalk sign read from thirty feet needs very different type than a foam board read from three
- Contrast beats colour. Light type on a light background disappears outdoors

Combining Sign Types at One Storefront
Almost nobody buys one sign. A retail location that actually pulls people in usually runs three or four formats at once, each doing a different job.
A typical storefront setup:
- A sandwich board on the sidewalk to catch people walking past
- Window graphics so the storefront reads as branded from across the street
- A vinyl banner above the entrance for whatever is running this month
- Foam boards inside for product and promotional messaging
