Mesh Banner Printing in Vancouver
A solid banner on an exposed fence is a sail. It fills with wind, tugs at every tie point, and eventually either the corners tear out or the fence starts moving. Mesh solves that by letting the wind straight through.
We print custom mesh banners in Vancouver for construction fencing, scaffolding, building wraps, sports fields and any outdoor site where wind load is the real design problem.
What 70/30 Mesh Means
Mesh is described by its ratio of surface to holes. Ours is a 70/30 weave: 70 percent of the face is printable material and 30 percent is thousands of tiny perforations woven through it.
Those holes are the entire point. Air passes through instead of pushing, so the banner sits still in a gust rather than ballooning. Less movement means less stress on the tie points, on the fence, and on the banner itself.
The material is 8oz, meaning eight ounces per square yard. That is deliberately lighter than solid banner vinyl. On a hundred foot fence run, weight is not a small detail, and a lighter banner puts less load on temporary fencing.
Printed with UV cured inks, a mesh banner holds its colour outdoors for roughly two to three years before fading becomes noticeable.
Flame Retardant Material and Site Requirements
This is the part most people find out about late.
Many construction sites, venues, event permits and property managers specify flame retardant material for anything mounted on scaffolding, hoarding or a building face. General contractors often require documentation before anything goes up, and a banner that arrives without it does not get installed.
Our mesh is a flame retardant material. If your site, venue or permit requires certification paperwork, tell us when you order and we will confirm what we can supply for your specific project. Ask before production rather than after, because it can affect which material we run.
Fence Banner Sizing and the Four Inch Rule
Chain link fence is where most mesh banners end up, and there is one measurement that decides whether the install looks professional.
Print the graphic about four inches shorter than the fence height. A five foot fence takes a graphic around four foot eight. That gap gives your zip ties room to wrap the top and bottom rails properly, which is what pulls the banner flat. Print it to the full fence height and the ties have nothing to grab, the banner sits loose, and it ripples for the rest of its life.
A few things worth knowing before you measure:
- Measure the fence panel, not the drawing. Temporary fence panels vary
- Plan around the vertical posts. A single long banner across multiple panels will bulge at every post
- Splitting a long run into panel sized banners looks better and is far easier to replace when one gets damaged
- Tie every point, not every second one. Skipping ties concentrates all the load on the ones you used
Scaffolding and Building Wraps
Mesh is the standard material for covering scaffolding and building faces, for two reasons. Wind is the obvious one. The other is that mesh lets air and light reach the trades working behind it, which solid vinyl does not.

Designing Artwork for Mesh Banners
Thirty percent of your artwork is going to be holes. That changes what works.
- Go bigger on type than you think you need. The perforations break up letterforms, so anything small or thin loses definition fast
- Avoid thin strokes and fine detail. Script fonts, hairline rules and detailed line art all suffer
- Push contrast harder. Effective ink coverage drops by roughly a third, so colours read slightly lighter than the same file on solid vinyl. Mid tone on mid tone disappears
- Keep photographs simple. A single strong subject works. Busy or subtly graded images turn to mush
- Design for the real viewing distance. Mesh reads as a solid image from thirty feet away. From three feet you see the weave, and that is normal
What It Looks Like at Night
Worth planning for, because it surprises people. Mesh does not block light. Anything lit behind the banner, work lights on scaffolding, an illuminated storefront, interior lighting, will show through and wash out your graphic after dark.
If your banner needs to read at night in front of a lit surface, tell us. Solid vinyl or a rigid board is the better answer in that situation.
Mesh Banner Sizes and Panel Layout
Everything is cut to your dimensions. Small fence panels through to full building coverage.
For very large jobs we plan the panel layout before printing, breaking the artwork at structural lines like scaffold levels or fence posts rather than wherever the material happens to run out. Getting that plan right is the difference between a wrap that looks intentional and one that looks patched.
Send us site photos along with your measurements. On a wrap or a long fence run, a photo tells us more than a dimension list.
When Mesh Is the Wrong Choice
Mesh is a specialist material. Three situations where it is not the answer.
Sheltered or indoor placement. If wind is not a factor you are giving up a third of your ink coverage for nothing. Use a vinyl banner and get the full image.
Close range reading. Menus, detailed information, small type. The weave gets in the way at short distances.
Anything photographed. Mesh is not a backdrop material. For indoor work that ends up in photos, fabric banners have a matte face with no sheen and no perforation.
Washing and Storing Mesh Banners
Mesh banners come down and go back up across multiple phases of a project, so they are worth looking after.
Wash with mild soap and water and let it air dry fully. The perforations trap road dust and construction grit, and a dirty mesh reads noticeably duller than a clean one.
Roll it, never fold it. A folded crease in a woven mesh sets permanently, unlike solid vinyl where creases relax out. Store it rolled, dry and out of direct sun.

What does 70/30 mesh mean?
Seventy percent of the banner face is printable material and thirty percent is perforations. Those holes let wind pass through instead of catching it, which is what makes mesh suitable for exposed outdoor sites.
Can you see through a mesh banner?
Partially, and it depends where you stand. From the front at normal viewing distance it reads as a solid graphic. From behind, and from close up, you can see through the weave. That is why mesh works on scaffolding, since crews behind it still get light and air.
Is mesh flame retardant?
Our mesh is a flame retardant material. If your site or venue needs certification documentation, ask us before production so we can confirm what we can provide for your project.

Roughly two to three years before fading is noticeable, longer if it is cleaned and stored properly between uses.
Mesh or solid vinyl for my fence?
Mesh for anything long, tall or exposed, and for anything on scaffolding. Solid vinyl for short sheltered runs where you want maximum image quality and wind is not a concern.
Can I reuse one across different sites?
Yes, that is common on multi phase projects. Wash it, air dry it, and roll rather than fold it for storage.
