Branded Pens Printed in Vancouver
No promotional item travels further than a pen. It goes from a conference table into a bag, from the bag onto a desk, and from the desk into a colleague’s hand. Every one of those moves is a new set of eyes on your logo, which is why cost per impression on pens beats almost everything else you can buy.
All of that only holds if the pen writes. A pen that skips gets binned within a week, and a binned pen produces exactly zero impressions no matter how good the logo looked. That is the frame for every decision on this page.
Plastic or Metal, and When Each Wins
This is not really a quality question. It is a question of what the pen is doing.
Plastic is for volume. Lightweight, available in every barrel colour, and cheap enough that you can put a bowl of them on a table and let people take handfuls. This is the right answer for trade shows, open houses, reception desks, community events, and anywhere the goal is reach.
Metal is for perception. It has weight in the hand, it feels deliberate, and it survives being carried in a bag for years. This is what goes to clients, into onboarding kits, and on a desk in a meeting where you want the pen to say something about the company.
A useful rule: if you are ordering a few hundred or more for an event, plastic with pad printing is the efficient path. If you are ordering a small number for named people, metal with laser engraving is worth the step up, and the difference per unit is smaller than most people expect.
Bamboo and recycled barrel options are available where your procurement policy calls for them. Ask us for the specific material details before you print any claim on the pen itself.
Pad Print, Laser Engrave, or Full Colour
Pad printing. Ink is lifted from an etched plate by a soft silicone pad, which then presses onto the barrel. Because the pad flexes, it wraps the curve instead of fighting it, and that is exactly why it became the standard for pens. Best for one or two flat colours, and the most economical at volume.
Laser engraving. The mark is burned into the metal rather than sitting on it. There is no ink to chip, fade or peel, so the logo outlasts the refill. On most metals the engraving reveals the base colour underneath, which is worth previewing before you commit. Colour fill can be added where you need the brand colour to show.
Full colour UV printing. Handles gradients, photographs and artwork with more colours than a pad print can carry economically. The right call when your logo genuinely needs more than two colours.
Barrel, Clip, or Cap
Most people only think about the barrel, and then run out of room.
The barrel is the primary surface and takes your logo and usually a short line of text. A web address fits comfortably. A full tagline usually does not.
The clip is a second surface almost nobody uses, and it is the part visible when the pen is sitting in a shirt pocket or a notebook loop. A short mark here works hard for something that costs almost nothing to add.
The cap or the top of a retractable pen gives you a third, small placement, useful for a symbol rather than words.
Splitting content across two surfaces, logo on the barrel and web address on the clip, reads far better than compressing everything into one line.
Imprint Colour Against Barrel Colour
The most common reason a batch of pens disappoints is contrast, and it is entirely avoidable.
Light imprint colours belong on dark barrels. Dark imprint colours belong on light barrels. A mid-tone logo on a mid-tone barrel technically prints correctly and is unreadable from a metre away, which defeats the point of the exercise.
If your brand colour sits close to the barrel colour you want, you have two options. Change the barrel to something that gives separation, or add a white underbase so the brand colour sits on a clean surface. We will flag this at proof stage rather than after production.
Ballpoint, Gel, or Rollerball
The refill decides how the pen feels to use, which decides whether it stays on the desk.
Ballpoint. Oil-based ink, dries almost instantly, and the cartridge lasts the longest. Reliable across every writing surface and the sensible default for anything going out in volume.
Gel. Smoother, richer line, noticeably nicer to write with. It runs through ink faster and takes a moment longer to dry, which matters for left-handed users. Worth it on premium pens where the writing experience is part of the impression.
Rollerball. Water-based, closest to a fountain pen feel. Reserved for executive pieces.
Black and blue are standard on almost every style. Other ink colours are available on selected pens, so tell us if it matters and we will match the pen to the requirement.
A Pen That Skips Is a Wasted Impression
It is tempting to buy on unit price alone. The problem is that a pen only advertises while it is being used.
The things that decide whether a pen survives past week one are not visible in a photograph. Whether the ink flows without pressure, whether the clip springs back instead of snapping, whether the click mechanism still works after a hundred presses, and whether the barrel flexes when someone writes hard.
This is why a slightly better pen at a marginally higher unit cost usually produces more total impressions than a cheaper one, even before you account for what a broken pen says about the brand printed on it.
Retractable or Capped
Retractable pens are more convenient and get picked up more often, because one hand is enough. The trade off is a click mechanism, which is the part most likely to fail on a low quality pen.
Capped pens have nothing to break and the cap gives you an extra printable surface. They also get separated from their caps constantly, which is how most of them end up dried out.
For giveaways at volume, retractable wins on pickup rate. For anything sitting in a drawer between uses, capped holds its ink longer.
Designing for a Curved Surface
A pen barrel is narrow and it curves away from the eye on both sides, so the usable window is smaller than the barrel looks.
Horizontal logos work. Tall stacked logos do not, because there is very little vertical room. If your mark is stacked, we will usually recommend a single-line version for this application.
Vector artwork in AI, EPS, SVG or PDF gives the cleanest result. Fine strokes and small type are the usual casualties, so anything hairline gets thickened before it goes to plate. You receive a digital proof showing the imprint at actual size and position on the barrel before production starts.
Where Branded Pens Get Used
Trade shows and conferences. Light, cheap to ship, and used during the event itself rather than after it. For how they fit into a wider booth plan, see our guide to the best promotional items for trade shows.
Reception desks and waiting rooms. Clinics, dental offices, salons and service counters. A cup of branded pens is continuous ambient advertising to everyone who signs something.
Real estate, legal and financial. Every signature is a moment where a pen changes hands. Metal reads correctly in these settings.
Onboarding and desk kits. A pen paired with a notebook gets used together, which multiplies the impressions from both. Commonly included in custom swag boxes.
Schools, universities and nonprofits. Low cost per unit, universally useful, and easy to distribute at scale.
Pens sit alongside the rest of our promotional products and work best as part of a set rather than on their own.

Custom Printed Pens FAQ
Should I order plastic or metal pens?
Plastic for volume distribution at events and reception desks, where reach matters more than perceived value. Metal for clients, executives and onboarding kits, where the weight in the hand is doing the work. Many businesses run both for different purposes.
Which printing method suits my logo?
Pad printing for one or two colours on plastic, which is the standard and the most economical at volume. Laser engraving for a permanent mark on metal that cannot chip or fade. Full colour UV printing when your artwork genuinely needs more than two colours.
What imprint colour should I choose?
Light on dark barrels, dark on light barrels. Low contrast is the most common reason a pen order disappoints, because a correctly printed logo that nobody can read from a metre away is still a failed pen. We flag contrast issues at proof stage.
Can I print on more than one part of the pen?
Yes. The barrel is the main surface, the clip is a second one most buyers overlook, and the cap or top gives a third small placement. Splitting your logo and web address across two surfaces reads better than cramming both onto one line.
What ink type is best for promotional pens?
Ballpoint for anything going out in volume, since it dries instantly and the cartridge lasts longest. Gel for premium pens where the writing feel is part of the impression, accepting that it uses ink faster. Black and blue are standard on almost every style.
Is there a minimum order?
There is no fixed minimum. Pad printing carries a setup, so cost per pen drops considerably as the count rises and then levels off. Small runs are still practical, particularly on metal with laser engraving where setup is minimal.
Will engraving show my brand colour?
Not by default. Laser engraving removes the surface finish and reveals the metal underneath, so the mark takes on that colour rather than yours. Colour fill can be added where the brand colour needs to appear, and we will show you which you are getting on the proof.

Custom Pens That Actually Represent Your Brand
A pen may seem small, but it reflects your brand every time it is used. Cheap looking pens can weaken perception, while well made custom pens reinforce professionalism.
