A hoodie is the one piece of merch people put on without being asked. That is the whole reason it is worth doing properly: a printed tee gets worn at the event, a good hoodie gets worn all winter.
Firebird Prints makes custom hoodies out of our Vancouver shop for staff teams, clothing brands, clubs, and events. Pullovers, zip ups, midweight fleece, heavyweight fleece, printed or embroidered, from one piece to a few hundred.
Most of the job happens before anything gets printed: picking a weight that suits how the hoodie will actually be worn, and a decoration method the fabric can carry. We will walk you through both.

Hoodie Fabric: Weight and Knit
The weight of the fleece decides almost everything: how warm the hoodie is, how it hangs, and how well a logo sits on it. Weight is measured in GSM, and the range breaks down roughly like this.
Lightweight, around 200 to 250 GSM: Thin and easy to layer. Good for spring events, giveaways, and warmer months. It drapes softly but has less structure, which matters when you get to decoration.
Midweight, around 250 to 320 GSM: The everyday hoodie, and the safest choice for most orders. Enough body to feel substantial, enough structure to hold a stitched logo flat. If you are not sure, this is where to start.
Heavyweight, 350 GSM and up: Dense, warm, and the closest thing to a retail streetwear piece. This is what brands reach for when the hoodie itself is the product rather than a carrier for a logo.
French terry or brushed fleece: French terry has a smooth face with small loops on the inside. It is lighter, breathes better, and drapes cleanly, which is why fashion and merch drops tend to use it. Brushed fleece has a soft, napped inside that traps warmth. It is the cosier option and what most people picture when they think of a hoodie.

Pullover Hoodies
The default. One clean front panel, which gives you the largest uninterrupted print area of any hoodie style.
Zip Up Hoodies
Easier to take on and off, which is why they win for staff wear and layering. The zip splits the front, so branding usually moves to the left chest, the back, or a sleeve.
Full Zip and Quarter Zip
A quarter zip reads more like team kit or corporate wear than streetwear, and works well when you want something a little more polished than a pullover.
Oversized and Drop Shoulder
The modern, relaxed fit that clothing brands and student groups ask for by name. Roomier body, shoulder seam sitting lower down the arm.
Cropped Hoodies
A shorter cut, popular for studio, event, and retail style merch, usually with smaller front branding to suit the reduced panel.
Fits and sizing
Unisex, women’s, and youth cuts across most styles, with extended sizing on many of them. For mixed groups, tell us the size breakdown and we will confirm what is available before production.
What Changes When You Print on a Hoodie
The pocket gets in the way. On a pullover, the kangaroo pocket sits right where a chest graphic wants to go. Print too low and the design runs into the pocket seam and buckles. We set hoodie placement higher than you would on a tee, and we will show you where it lands before printing.
The hood limits how high you can go. There is less usable space above the chest than people expect, because the hood and the neck seam eat into it. Tall, stacked artwork often needs reworking.
Fleece is not a flat surface. A brushed or napped fleece has texture, so fine lines and small text sink into it and lose their edge. Bolder artwork almost always looks better on fleece than delicate artwork does.
Why prints crack, and how to avoid it. Cracking usually comes from ink that was not cured properly, or from a heavy solid block of ink sitting on a fabric that stretches underneath it. Curing at the right temperature for the fabric, and choosing coverage that suits the garment, is most of the answer. If a design is heading for trouble on the blank you picked, we will say so first.
Zip hoodies need a plan. Anything crossing the zip line will split, so front graphics on a zip up either sit to one side or move to the back.
Embroidered Hoodies
A stitched logo turns a hoodie from merch into workwear. It is the finish most companies want for staff hoodies, because it reads as deliberate rather than promotional and it outlasts the garment.
Weight matters more here than anywhere else. Midweight fleece is the sweet spot. It gives the machine something firm to stitch against, so the logo lays flat and the edges stay clean. Very light French terry tends to pucker around a chest sized logo because the fabric stretches under thread tension, and very heavy, loosely napped fleece can swallow fine letterforms. If you have your heart set on a light or heavy blank, we will tell you honestly how the logo will sit on it.
Placement. Left chest is the standard and suits almost every corporate logo. Sleeves work for a smaller secondary mark. Large back designs are usually better printed than stitched, since a big block of stitching adds weight and can pull on the panel.
Setup. Your logo is digitized first, which means it is converted into a stitch file built for that specific fabric. We keep the file, so a reorder next season matches this one.

The process is short. Send your artwork, pick a style and weight, approve the proof, and we print. If something about the fabric or the design will not work, you will hear it before production rather than after.

What hoodie weight should I choose?
Midweight fleece suits most orders and handles both printing and embroidery well. Go lighter for spring events and layering, heavier when the hoodie is meant to feel like a retail piece.
What is the difference between French terry and fleece?
French terry has a smooth face with small loops inside, so it is lighter and drapes better. Brushed fleece has a soft napped interior and is warmer. Terry leans fashion, fleece leans cosy.
Should I print or embroider my logo on a hoodie?
Embroidery suits small logos on the chest or sleeve and gives a corporate, hardwearing finish. Printing suits larger, detailed or multi colour artwork, especially across the back.
Why do some hoodie prints crack?
Usually because the ink was not cured properly, or because a heavy solid design was put on a fabric that moves underneath it. The right cure and sensible coverage prevent it.
Can I put a design across the front of a zip up hoodie?
Not across the zip itself, since the graphic would split. On zip ups we move front branding to one side, or put the main design on the back.
