Custom Keychains Printed and Engraved in Vancouver
A keychain is the only promotional item that gets touched several times a day, every day, for years. It also has almost no surface area, which means every decision you make about it matters more than it would on a larger item.
Firebird Prints produces keychains in acrylic, metal, rubber and leather-style finishes for events, retail, real estate, and branded kits. What follows is what actually changes the result.
Acrylic, Metal, or Rubber
Acrylic. Full colour, any shape, and the lowest practical entry point. Artwork is printed and sealed between two clear layers, so it cannot scratch or peel off. Best for detailed illustration, photographs, gradients, and anything you want cut to the outline of your logo.
Metal. Weight in the hand is the whole point. A metal keychain reads as a gift rather than a giveaway, and it lasts effectively forever. Suits simple, bold marks. Fine detail and gradients do not survive the process.
Rubber and PVC. Moulded, flexible, and good for chunky three dimensional shapes with strong flat colours. Popular for mascots, sports and youth brands.
Leather-style. Debossed or foil stamped, quiet and understated. Used for executive gifting, hotels, and automotive.
Soft Enamel or Hard Enamel
This is the decision that determines what a metal keychain feels like, and most buyers have never been told it exists.
Soft enamel. The design is struck into the metal and the recessed areas are filled with colour. The metal lines stay raised above the fill, so you can feel the design with a fingertip. It costs less and the texture catches light, which is why it is the most common choice.
Hard enamel, also called cloisonné. Same start, but the enamel is fired, ground back and polished until it sits perfectly level with the metal. The result is a smooth glass-like surface that resists scratching. It costs more and it is what makes an item feel like jewellery rather than merchandise.
Die struck. No colour at all. Just stamped metal in your chosen plating, which works well for monograms and single-colour marks. Plating options run through gold, silver, nickel, copper, black nickel and antique finishes.
Why Metal Has a One Time Mould Cost
Metal keychains need a die cut to the shape of your design before anything can be struck. That tooling is a separate one-off charge, and it is the number that surprises people on their first metal order.
Two things soften it. It is charged once rather than per piece, so it disappears into the unit cost at volume. And we keep the mould on file, so a reorder skips the tooling entirely and matches the original exactly.
This is also why metal carries a higher minimum than acrylic. A run of fifty makes no sense against a tooling charge. If your quantity is small, acrylic or UV printing on a stock blank will get you there without it.
Acrylic Thickness and Printing
Acrylic is specified by thickness, and 3mm is the standard. It holds up to daily carry without feeling like a toy. 5mm is available where you want noticeable substance, which is worth considering for retail pieces people are paying for.
Most sizes land between one and three inches across. Below an inch, detail starts disappearing. Above three, it stops being comfortable in a pocket.
Because your artwork is printed on an inner layer and sandwiched, the surface stays clean after years of rubbing against keys. This is the practical advantage over printing directly onto a surface, where the ink is the outermost layer and eventually wears.
Split Ring, Lobster Clasp, or Carabiner
Hardware decides how the item actually gets used, and it costs almost nothing to choose deliberately.
A split ring is the standard flat keyring, usually 25 to 30mm. It goes on keys and stays there. A swivel lobster clasp clips on and off easily, which moves the item onto a bag, a belt loop, or a zip pull, where far more people will see it.
A carabiner adds function and bulk, and suits outdoor and trade audiences. A short ball chain gives the piece a little movement and is common on retail charms.
If your goal is visibility rather than utility, a clasp beats a ring. Keys live in pockets. Bags do not.
Designing for a Two Inch Object
Artwork that looks fine on screen frequently fails at this size, and it is worth knowing why before you send files.
Thin strokes close up and small text fills in. As a rule, simplify one level further than feels necessary. A logo that works on a business card usually needs its wordmark dropped or enlarged on a keychain.
Vector files in AI, EPS, SVG or PDF give the cleanest cut line. Leave a small bleed on anything running to the edge, and keep text a few millimetres clear of the cut, because laser and die cutting both carry a small tolerance. You get a digital proof showing the piece at actual size before production.
The Mirrored Back Problem
On a double sided acrylic keychain, the reverse is normally a mirror of the front. That is fine for a symmetrical mark and a disaster for text, because the back reads backwards.
The fix is simple once you know: supply separate back artwork. It can be the same logo correctly oriented, a plain colour, a website address, or a second design entirely. Most people only discover this at proof stage, which costs a round of revisions.
Names and Numbers on Each Piece
Full colour UV printing can carry different text on every unit at no extra setup, which opens up things a single fixed design cannot do.
Staff keychains with individual names. Property tags with unit numbers for real estate and building management. Numbered limited editions for retail drops. Send the list as a spreadsheet and it gets merged into the run.
Laser engraving can also carry individual serial numbers or QR codes on metal, with a small per piece charge for the engraving time.
Where Branded Keychains Get Used
Events and booth giveaways. Light, cheap to ship, and small enough that nobody declines one. For how they fit into a wider booth plan, see our guide to the best promotional items for trade shows.
Real estate and property. Handed over with the keys at closing, which is a moment people remember, and then carried permanently.
Retail and tourism. Low price point, high impulse, and easy to display on a spinner. Acrylic works hardest here because full colour artwork sells.
Corporate gifting and staff recognition. Metal, with a name or a date. This is where hard enamel and engraving earn their cost.
Bottle opener keychains. Worth calling out separately. Adding a function turns a giveaway into something people keep on purpose, which is why breweries, bars and festivals order them heavily.
Keychains also work as a supporting piece alongside the rest of our promotional products rather than as a standalone campaign.

Custom Keychain FAQ
What is the difference between soft and hard enamel?
Soft enamel leaves the metal lines raised above the colour fill, so the surface has texture you can feel. Hard enamel is fired and polished flush, giving a smooth glass-like finish that resists scratching. Soft costs less, hard feels more premium.
Which keychain material suits my design?
Acrylic for full colour, photographs, gradients and detailed illustration. Metal for simple bold marks where weight and permanence matter. Rubber for chunky three dimensional shapes. Send the artwork and we will tell you which processes it survives.
Is double sided worth the extra?
Only if people approach from two directions. In an aisle or an open floor it roughly doubles who sees your message. Against a wall it adds weight and cost for nothing.
What widths do you offer?
33, 39, 47 and 59 inches. For anything wider, a custom backdrop is a better solution than two stands side by side.
Should I choose vinyl or fabric?
Fabric if the banner will be photographed, because it has no surface sheen and will not flare under flash. Vinyl for everything else. Both are available on premium hardware.
Can the height be adjusted?
Yes. The telescopic pole covers roughly 30 to 84 inches, so one base can run graphics of different heights and fit venues with low clearance.
What if the graphic starts sagging?
Use the tension knob on the cassette to re-tighten the roller. That adjustment is one of the main practical reasons to buy at this tier.
Do you match colour across reorders and multiple units?
Yes. Multi unit orders print in one run, and later reorders are matched against your original file so new graphics still match your existing set.
