How Your Backdrop Gets Built
A backdrop is defined by what it does. It is the branded surface behind your stage, booth, or photo area. What it is built from is a separate decision, and it is the one that changes the price, the setup time, and how the edges look on camera.
3 frame systems cover almost every backdrop we produce. Here is which one suits which job.
Tension Fabric Frames for Photo and Press Work
Silicone edge graphics press into a channel in an extruded aluminium frame, so the fabric tensions flat right out to the edge with no hardware showing. That matters more for backdrops than for booth walls, because a step and repeat is photographed close up and any visible frame edge ends up in the shot.
It is also the only one of the three that reconfigures. A 20ft media wall can come apart into two 10ft walls for a smaller venue, and towers or curved sections can be added later.
Slowest to assemble of the three. Worth it when the backdrop is the thing being photographed.
Pop Up Frames for Backdrops That Travel
The frame concertinas open in one motion and the printed fabric stays attached to it, so there is nothing to align and nothing to lose between events. One person has it standing in a few minutes without tools.
This is the right call for roadshows, conference series, and any team setting up their own backdrop at venue after venue. The trade off is a fixed width and a frame edge that is visible up close.
Expanding Frames When the Venue Keeps Changing
Telescopic poles adjust in both width and height, and the printed banner slides on through sewn pole pockets. One frame covers a range of sizes rather than a single fixed one.
Useful when you do not control the space, which is most of the time with hotel ballrooms, foyers, and borrowed rooms. It is also the lowest cost route to a full width backdrop, and the same frame takes a step and repeat graphic or a plain stage panel depending on the event.
Graphic Only, No Frame
If you already own a frame, or the venue supplies pipe and drape, you only need the printed panel. We finish with pole pockets, hem and grommet, or hook and loop to suit whatever you are hanging it on. Send the frame model or the channel dimensions and we will match the finished size so it tensions correctly.

Types of Custom Backdrops
Step and Repeat Walls
A repeating logo or sponsor pattern built for the camera. Used at red carpet events, press conferences, award nights and photo ops.
The pattern has to be spaced so a logo stays fully visible no matter where someone stands, which is a layout problem more than a print problem. We handle that spacing for you.
Media Walls and Press Walls
Wider formats for interviews, announcements and media scrums, printed on low sheen material so camera flash and venue lighting do not blow out your logo.
Trade Show and Booth Backdrops
Back walls sized to standard booth footprints, straight or curved. These pair with custom booths, printed tablecloths and the rest of our trade show essentials.
Stage and Conference Backdrops
Large format panels behind speakers, panels and keynote stages. Usually the widest format we produce and often the one with the tightest install window.

Backdrop Sizes: 8ft, 10ft and 20ft Wide
Most backdrops fall into a few common widths:
- 8 ft wide for photo ops, small stages and tight booth corners
- 10 ft wide for standard booth back walls and step and repeat
- 20 ft wide for double booths, media walls and main stages
- Custom widths and heights when the venue does not cooperate
Standard height runs 8 ft, with taller options where ceiling clearance allows. Formats are straight or curved, and graphics print single sided or double sided when both faces of the wall are exposed.
Fabric or Vinyl Backdrop Material
Most backdrops print on stretch polyester fabric using dye sublimation. The ink bonds into the fibre rather than sitting on top, so the graphic does not crack at fold lines and the fabric can be washed and reused. Fabric also travels folded in a bag instead of rolled in a tube, which matters more than people expect when you are flying to an event.
For a rigid, wipe clean surface, we also print backdrops on heavy vinyl. Vinyl is the better call for repeated outdoor or high traffic use. Fabric is the better call for anything photographed.
Fabric backdrops are finished with a matte, low glare surface. Under stage lights and camera flash that is the difference between a clean shot and a white hotspot across your logo.
Backdrop Frames, Setup and Transport
Graphic only, or graphic with frame. Both are available.

Frames stay usable across campaigns. When branding changes you replace the fabric, not the whole system.
Artwork and Step and Repeat Layout
- Vector logos wherever possible. Raster files at 150 DPI at full print size is workable for large format
- Keep critical content roughly 12 inches off the floor line so it clears people standing in front
- For step and repeat, alternate rows and angle the pattern slightly so no logo is ever fully hidden
- Avoid heavy solid black across a large fabric area, it shows handling marks
- Send us the frame model or venue dimensions before you finalise artwork

Custom Backdrop FAQ
What is a step and repeat backdrop?
A backdrop printed with a logo or sponsor pattern repeated across the surface, angled and offset so at least one full logo lands in frame no matter where someone stands. Standard at press events, red carpets and photo activations.
What size should a backdrop be?
8 ft wide covers one or two people for photos. 10 ft wide is the standard booth back wall. 20 ft wide suits media walls and main stages. Height is usually 8 ft. Send us the venue dimensions and we will confirm.
Fabric or vinyl?
Fabric for anything photographed or flown to an event. It is matte, seamless and packs down small. Vinyl for heavy handling, outdoor use or when you want a wipe clean surface.
Will the backdrop reflect camera flash?
Our fabric backdrops use a matte low glare finish specifically to avoid that. Glossy vinyl will hotspot under direct flash, which is why we steer photo and press work toward fabric.
Can the graphic be replaced without buying a new frame?
Yes. Frames are reusable. Most clients keep one frame and rotate graphics as campaigns change.
Are backdrops washable and reusable?
Dye sublimated fabric graphics can be washed and reused across many events. Fold them along different lines each time and creases relax out on their own once tensioned.
Can you design the artwork?
Yes. Send a logo and dimensions and our team will build the layout, including step and repeat spacing, at no extra cost.
