Custom Fabric Banner Printing in Vancouver
Hang a vinyl banner in a well lit showroom and you will see a bright stripe across it from every ceiling light. Hang a fabric banner in the same spot and the light lands on it evenly. That is the whole difference, and indoors it decides everything.
We print custom fabric banners in Vancouver on woven polyester using dye sublimation. Also called cloth banners, they hang softly, photograph cleanly, fold into a bag, and can go through a washing machine.
How Dye Sublimation Works
Worth understanding, because every advantage on this page comes from it.
Your artwork is printed in reverse onto a transfer sheet, then pressed against the polyester at around 400 degrees. At that temperature the ink turns straight from solid to gas, the fibres open, and the dye bonds inside them as they cool.
So the colour is not sitting on the surface. It is part of the thread. Nothing to crack along a fold line, nothing to scratch off, and no coating to catch the light. This is also why fabric has no sheen at all, while vinyl always keeps some.
9oz Polyester and Blockout Fabric
Our standard is a 9oz woven polyester, tightly woven so fine detail holds and text stays crisp at close range. Soft matte face, low light reflection, good opacity for rich colour.
Two variations when the job needs them:
- Blockout fabric has an opaque core. Use it when the banner is printed both sides, or when a window or light source sits behind it and would otherwise glow through
- Backlit fabric is the opposite, designed to diffuse light evenly from behind for illuminated displays
A recycled polyester option is available if that matters for your organisation. Same print result.
Washing Fabric Banners and Removing Creases
This is the part people do not expect.
Fabric banners are machine washable. Cold water, gentle cycle, then hang to dry. Because the dye is inside the fibre rather than printed on top, washing does not touch the image. A banner that has been through three seasons of events can be washed and go back up looking new. No vinyl banner can do that.
Never put it in a dryer and never iron it directly. Polyester melts, and a hot iron will leave a permanent shiny mark.
The material is wrinkle resistant, not wrinkle proof. Light creases from folding relax out on their own within a day of hanging. If you need it perfect immediately, a handheld garment steamer held a few inches away clears them in a couple of minutes.
For storage, roll it with the printed side facing outward rather than folding. Rolling that direction keeps the print surface in slight tension instead of compressing it.
Sewn Hems, Rod Pockets and Hanging Options
Fabric needs different finishing than vinyl, because it drapes instead of holding a shape.
- Sewn hem. A folded and stitched edge on all four sides. Stops fraying and gives the banner enough weight at the perimeter to hang straight. This is standard on everything we produce
- Rod pockets. A sewn sleeve top and bottom, available in 2 inch and 3 inch, for a rod or dowel to slide through. The bottom rod is what keeps a hanging banner flat instead of swinging
- Hook and loop edging. For booth walls, panel systems and anywhere you want it removable
- Silicone edge. For frame systems, covered below
Ceiling suspended banners are common in retail and in large halls. Tell us the drop height and whether it will be seen from both sides, since that changes both the material and the finishing.
SEG Graphics for Frames You Already Own
A silicone edge graphic has a thin silicone strip stitched around the perimeter, roughly 3mm thick, which pushes into the channel of an aluminium frame.
The fabric pulls drum tight with no visible hardware, no shadows and no wrinkles at the corners.
If you already have SEG frames or light boxes, we print replacement graphics to your frame dimensions. Send us the frame size and the channel width and we will match it.
If you need the frame as well, that is a tension fabric display kit rather than a banner, and the hardware options are covered there.
Fabric Banner Sizes and Seamless Width
Everything is cut and sewn to your dimensions.
Fabric rolls run about 8 feet wide, so anything up to that prints as one seamless piece. Beyond it, panels are sewn together.
A sewn seam in fabric is far less visible than a weld in vinyl, but we still plan the seam to fall along a natural break in the artwork rather than through a logo. Send us the artwork before you commit to a size and we will show you where the seam lands.
Where Fabric Banners Work
- Retail interiors, ceiling hung graphics and window displays
- Shopping centres, lobbies and atriums where banners hang from height
- Corporate offices, reception walls and boardrooms
- Churches, community halls and cultural centres
- Schools, universities and gymnasiums, including team and championship banners
- Gyms, studios and clinics
- Hotels, restaurants and event venues
- Conferences and exhibitions, alongside printed tablecloths
The common thread is that all of these get seen up close, under artificial light, often with a camera present.
Fabric, Vinyl or Mesh
Simple rule. Fabric is an indoor material. Choose it when the banner will be viewed closely, lit artificially, photographed, reused, or transported often.
Outdoors, choose something else. Polyester absorbs water and fades in direct sun. A covered patio for an afternoon is fine. A fence for a season is not. That is a vinyl banner, or a mesh banner if wind is involved.
A couple of neighbouring products worth knowing about. If what you actually need is a large branded wall behind people for photos, start with custom backdrops. If you want a fabric graphic in a portable stand rather than a hanging banner, premium retractable banners take a fabric option.
Fabric Banner Artwork and Extra Bleed
- Print ready PDF, vector logos where you have them, raster at 150 DPI at full size or better
- Fabric needs an extra inch of bleed on all sides for hemming and sewing
- Keep critical content clear of the top and bottom if you are ordering rod pockets
- Dye sublimation renders colour slightly differently than vinyl, so if this banner sits next to existing signage, send us the other piece or its colour references
- Large solid dark areas show handling marks over repeated use. Break them up where you can
No layout yet? Send your logo and content and our design team will build it, at no charge.

Fabric Banner FAQ
Is a fabric banner the same as a cloth banner?
Yes. Fabric banner, cloth banner and soft signage all describe a printed woven polyester banner. Same material and same process whichever term you use.
Can I really wash it?
Yes. Cold water on a gentle cycle, then hang to dry. The dye is bonded inside the fibre so the image is unaffected. Never use a dryer and never iron it directly.
Why does fabric photograph better than vinyl?
Because there is no coating on the surface to reflect. Vinyl throws a hotspot under camera flash and directional lighting. Fabric scatters light evenly, so the logo stays readable in the shot.
How do I get the creases out?
Hang it and most will drop out within a day. For faster results use a handheld steamer a few inches from the surface. Do not press an iron onto it.
Can fabric banners be printed on both sides?
Yes, on blockout fabric so neither face shows through the other. Standard fabric is single sided, since light passes through it.
What is a silicone edge graphic?
A thin silicone strip sewn around the edge that pushes into the groove of an aluminium frame, pulling the fabric tight with no visible fixings. If you already own the frames, we print graphics to fit them.
What is the largest seamless size?
About 8 feet in one direction, which is the roll width. Larger banners are sewn from panels, and the seam is much less noticeable than on vinyl.
Can I use one outdoors?
Only briefly and under cover. Polyester takes on water and fades in direct sun. For anything genuinely exterior, use vinyl or mesh.
Does the venue need flame retardant material?
Some indoor venues do, particularly for suspended graphics. Check with your venue before ordering and tell us, because it affects which fabric we run.
Do you offer volume rates?
Yes. Multi location and multi banner orders print in one run so colour matches across the whole set, and volume rates apply.
