Eco-Friendly Printing

Sustainability is becoming a core expectation in modern branding. Businesses today are not only judged by how their products look, but also by how responsibly they are produced.

Eco-friendly printing focuses on reducing environmental impact through smarter materials, cleaner inks, and more efficient production methods. Instead of treating sustainability as an afterthought, many brands now build their visual identity around environmentally responsible printing practices.

At Firebird Prints, we provide eco-friendly printing services in Vancouver for businesses that want to align strong visual branding with sustainable production standards.

Water Based and Discharge Inks

What Makes Printing Eco-Friendly?
Wide eco-friendly branded merchandise order prepared in a Vancouver print studio

Ink is where most of the environmental difference in apparel decoration actually sits:

Water based inks, the pigment carrier is water rather than PVC and phthalate based plasticiser. Softer hand feel on cotton, and no plastic film left on the garment.
Discharge printing, removes the garment’s dye and replaces it with pigment, so no additional ink layer is added at all.
Low-VOC and digital ink systems, reduced solvent content compared with traditional plastisol and solvent processes.

Water based and discharge printing are both available through our screen printing service. Where full colour artwork rules those out, DTF printing produces no screens and no screen reclaim chemistry, which removes a waste stream from the process.

Organic Cotton and Recycled Merch Options

Materials we work with across apparel and promotional products:

  • Organic cotton: grown without synthetic pesticides; available across t-shirts, hoodies and tote bags
  • Recycled cotton and blends: diverts textile waste from landfill
  • Recycled polyester (rPET): made from reclaimed plastic bottles
  • Bamboo and wheat-straw composites: used in selected promotional items
  • Reusable drinkware: a branded bottle or tumbler replaces disposable cups over its life, which is the clearest waste reduction in the promotional category

How to Reduce Waste in a Merch Order

Materials are only part of it. These are the production decisions that change the footprint of an order:

  • Order to actual need: the largest source of waste in branded merch is overproduction. We will tell you when a smaller run makes more sense than hitting the next price break.
  • Batch planning: combining designs and orders reduces setup waste, screen reclaim and material offcuts.
  • Durability as sustainability: a print that cracks in six months means the garment is replaced. Correct curing and the right method for the fabric extend product life, which outweighs most material level differences.
  • Minimal packaging: bulk packing rather than individual polybags where the order allows.
  • Local production: printed in East Vancouver, which removes cross border freight from the supply chain for local clients.

Documentation for Procurement and ESG Reporting

If sustainability is a scored criterion in your purchasing process, tell us at quote stage. We can provide:

  • Material composition and certification references for the specific items quoted
  • Ink and decoration method specifications
  • Supplier information for your vendor questionnaire
  • Packaging and production details for reporting purposes

We would rather give you accurate information you can put in front of a committee than a marketing claim you have to defend. Where an item does not have a certification, we say so.

    Sustainable Printing FAQ

    What makes printing eco-friendly?

Three things, in order of impact: the garment or product material, the ink and decoration method, and how much gets produced. Certified organic or recycled materials, water-based or discharge inks instead of plastisol, and ordering to actual need rather than overproducing are the decisions that change a project’s footprint most.

Are water based inks better for the environment than plastisol?

Water based inks use water as the pigment carrier rather than PVC and plasticisers, so no plastic layer is left on the garment and the print has a softer hand feel. They work best on cotton and light fabrics. Plastisol remains the more practical choice on some dark and synthetic garments, so the honest answer is that the best environmental choice depends on the fabric.

Can you provide certification documents for a tender or supplier questionnaire?

Yes. Tell us at quote stage which items you are considering and what your procurement process requires, and we will supply material composition, certification references and decoration method details for those specific items.

    Does eco-friendly printing cost more?

Certified organic and recycled garments generally carry a higher unit cost than conventional blanks. The gap narrows at volume, and it often closes entirely when the alternative is replacing merchandise that did not last. We will quote both so you can see the actual difference rather than assume it.

What is the single most sustainable choice in branded merchandise?

Ordering less of something people will actually keep. A well made reusable item that stays in use for years outperforms a larger run of low cost giveaways on every environmental measure, regardless of what either is made from.
